Answer: “Hey, Y’all, watch this!”

Question: What’s the last thing a Southerner says before meeting Jesus?

As a Southerner, I know there’s some truth to this old joke. While I’ve had a few “Hey, Y’all” moments, fortunately, none have led to my demise.

Yet.

I hope this endeavor won’t, either.

Instead of “Hey Y’all, watch this”, though, I have adopted a new phrase.

It is: “This might not work.”

I didn’t invent this phrase. I borrowed it from best selling author and visionary Seth Godin.  He uses it in the audio book Leap First: Creating Work That Matters when he talks about the reason most people don’t even try to create something.  He says they cannot handle the tension between ‘This might work’ and ‘This might not work’, so they don’t even try.

Well, I’m going to try to handle the tension.

I had my own phrase: “Just dumb enough to try”. I decided that didn’t have the right vibe. “This might not work” has a similar connotation as “Just dumb enough to try” but perhaps is not so negative. It means I’m going to give this a shot. If it doesn’t work out, that is OK. I tried and can put the itch to rest.  But maybe, I’ll end up creating something meaningful.

I’m like that. I like to try new things. I’ve had wild ideas and I’ve acted on many of them. While not all (or even most) were successful in many people’s eyes, they all had one thing in common: I learned from them.

Here is what this project is all about. My quest. A real honest attempt to provide quality products and build a business. If it works, I might just achieve my ultimate goal, a dream I’ve had for quite some time: an independent business man. No longer working for The Man.

And if it doesn’t work? I’ll probably be out of some (more) money, time and maybe self confidence, but I will most likely have put a few more pieces of the puzzle in place.  Then I’ll regroup and try again.

So, do you follow blogs where the writers are all-knowing and every post gives you five ways to get rich or be successful? Well, this is not that blog. But if you like the stories of Rocky Balboa, Luke Skywalker or Cole Trickle, where underdogs overcomes big odds, then this is a blog for you. Except the Hollywood ending is not known or guaranteed. I’ll write it as I go along. Please join me on this journey by subscribing:
